Who’s made the worst comments: Trump or Bolsonaro?
It was in November 2016 that the United States of America shocked much of the world by electing billionaire businessman and real estate tycoon Donald Trump as their 45th President, defeating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a bitter and divisive election. Trump’s Presidency has carried on in much the same way as his campaign and life so far, with a vast number of lies and offensive comments, often uniting a divided Washington in outrage at his actions. Much of America sees him as a hero of the forgotten working class, with others see him as a corrupt racist and sexist.
His election has been seen a major milestone in global politics and has provided a lot of inspiration to right wing nationalist and populist politicians across the world. One such politician is the new President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who has been nicknamed “the Trump of the Tropics”, has proven to be just as controversial and divisive as his North American counterpart, but some have argued that Bolsonaro’s history and record is actually more horrifying and, generally, worse than that of President Trump.
Both countries are vital trading partners for countries across the world, such as the UK, exporting and importing vital goods and supporting major industries, the things that these leaders do and say really matter to those abroad too. So, the question is who’s made the worst comments: Trump or Bolsonaro? Here’s some of the most damning and important evidence for both of them, and then it’s up to you to make your own mind up about whether Bolsonaro is the Trump of the Tropics, or something more dangerous.
There is a whole litany of deeply offensive and disgusting things that have been said by President Trump, but perhaps the worst to date is the notorious “Access Hollywood tape” which came out during the campaign in 2016 in which the now President of the United States is heard bragging about sexually assaulting woman and getting away with it. The full litany of controversial Trump comments is too big to detail but includes gems such as believing the Russian President over his own intelligence agencies, describing white supremacists as “very fine people” after a far-right terror attack in Charlottesville.
So, what could be worse than all of that? Well, Bolsonaro has previously stated that he would rather his son was dead than gay, he has told a female politician that he wouldn’t rape her because she’s too ugly, and called black activists “animals”. But he has also praised Brazil’s brutal former military dictatorship, supported the use of torture by the police and security services, said that his daughter was born because he had gone weak after 4 boys, threatened to lead a military coup in 1999, and has suggested that he supports forced sterilisation of the poor.
So, it’s up to you to decide which you think has said the very worst things!
